In this Illinois Reading Council publication, Christine describes an action research project she completed with her students. Students wrote to people in various occupations and professions asking them the types of reading and writing they had to do in order to perform their jobs. Students collected and classified the information. What students learned about the amount of reading and writing required in different jobs opened their eyes to the literacy demands in the real world.
