Keynote Address
Life's Literacy Highway: Steps and Stops Along the Way
 

Teachers and pre-service teachers have described this keynote address as "energetic, hilarious, enthusiastic, awesome, entertaining, informative, and AMAZING!"

This sixty-minute keynote includes a description of Chris' journey along her literacy highway with steps and stops along the way she has made with her students. Beginning with the publication of her first magazine article in 1985, Chris demonstrates such "stops" as student-written poetry, a rousing rendition of an interactive read-aloud, believable and unbelievable Quotable Quotations, Metaphor Highways, and Six-Word Memoirs.

All-Day or Half-Day Workshops for Reading, Language Arts, and English Teachers

This workshop is designed for reading and language arts teachers in upper elementary, middle school, and junior high school. This interactive workshop includes everything teachers need to get students reading and to keep them reading. Topics include Readers' Theater, Poetry Performance, Fish Bowl, Book Blasts, Book Blogs, Speed Booking, Read-Alouds, Book Matching, Literature Circles, Differentiation Projects, Individual Reading Conferences, Reading Response Activities, and Storytelling.

Seek, Nurture, and Excite the Writer Inside Every Student!
All-Day or Half-Day Workshops for Reading, Language Arts, and English Teachers

This workshop is designed for reading, Language Arts, and English Teachers in the upper elementary, middle school, and junior high school who especially need assistance helping struggling writers. This workshop includes a demonstration of how teachers can use Puzzle Paragraphs to teach struggling writers how to read and write eight different types of paragraphs. Topics also include how teachers can embed grammar instruction within their writing instruction to encourage students to revise and edit their writing. Additionally, teachers will learn ways to helps students build rich, lasting writing vocabularies. Finally, ISAT writing and extended response will be addressed if teachers wish to include these topics.

Embedding Reading Strategies in ALL Classes for ALL Students
Half-Day Workshop for Content Area Teachers

This half-day workshop is designed for middle school as well as junior and senior high school content-area teachers. The first portion of the workshop explains and demonstrates through hands-on activities the reading process and how teachers can help students achieve content comprehension. The second portion of the workshop describes various reading strategies teachers can use in their classrooms to help students before, during, and after reading their textbooks and other classroom-assigned materials. A special emphasis is placed on vocabulary acquisition strategies.

After-School Specials: Sixty Minute Pick-Ups

This sixty-minute fast-paced workshop includes demonstrations of Chris' students' favorite fifteen reading activities including No Talking Dialogue, Storytelling with Sound Effects, Sensational Summaries, Pantoum Portraits, Telephone Poems, and Six-Word Memoir.

Reading to Write and Writing to Read: My Students' Favorite WRITING Activities
After-School Specials: Sixty Minute Pick-Ups

This sixty-minute fast-paced workshop includes demonstrations of Chris' students' favorite reading activities including Readers' Theater, Musical Read-Alouds, Independent Reading, Book Blast, and Reading Response Activities including Character Ties, Puzzle Person, Plot Turning Point Posters, and Graphic Novel Renditions.
